Why Motivation Is Good for Employees

The conditions in the workplace that support motivation also support an increased sense of well-being, which is simply the sense that an individual has of being comfortable, healthy, and happy. It is linked to having work that matches skills and preferences, with a desirable amount of autonomy. A level of variety, supervisor support, and sufficient opportunities for interactions with coworkers or clients that is aligned with personal preferences supports this feeling of well-being (Biggio & Cortese, 2013). A sense of well-being at work has two components. The first is the sense that the work that you are doing is appreciated as being of value; the second is a positive working climate with good relationships.

Motivated employees view their workplaces as being fairer than do their less motivated colleagues. This positive emotion helps to prevent burnout, and motivated employees also tend to be both physically and psychologically healthier. They report a higher level of contentment with their lives in general and demonstrate better coping skills when things go wrong.

Being motivated at work, leading to a general sense of well-being, has a positive impact on individuals outside of work as work and home lives are interrelated and have a reciprocal effect on each other. The emotions from work will spill over to home and vice versa, so workplace efforts to support motivation have a benefit for employees’ home lives. Motivation and well-being are associated with better health and a general sense of energy and enthusiasm about life (Danna & Griffin, 1999).
